WYD08 has developed special World Youth Day school curriculum materials for Australian schools and parishes. They are intended to supplement existing Diocesan Religious Education Curricula across Australia and are designed so they can be embedded within the teaching of existing units and themes.
WYD08 will be releasing one module of the curriculum materials for each of the 5 semesters from July 2006 to December 2008.
Each module will contain a variety of resources for teachers including:
- Commentary on aspects of World Youth Day
- Scripture reflections based on the theme
- Teaching and learning strategies
- Liturgies and prayers
The WYD08 curriculum materials are intended for use in Senior Primary, Junior Secondary and Senior Secondary classrooms in Catholic systemic and independent schools as well as state schools. Additionally, the materials are available for use in parish and home settings.
Through the use of the WYD08 curriculum materials, it is intended that students will:
- gain a greater knowledge and understanding of WYD and explore ways in which they can prepare for and participate in WYD08;
- listen to and read stories and passages from Scripture;
- engage with Scripture through wondering and reflecting together;
- develop an informed understanding and greater appreciation of the content and message of Scripture;
- respond creatively and reflectively to Scripture through discussion, art, drama, role play and/or creative writing;
- relate Scripture to their everyday lives of prayer, faith and the search for meaning;
- relate Scripture to preparation for and participation in World Youth Day 2008 (WYD08);
- recognise their baptismal call be witnesses to Christ and respond to the power they receive from the Holy Spirit.
We encourage all teachers, catechists and parishes to review and use the curriculum materials as they are released.
Module 1 of the WYD08 school curriculum materials will be made available here soon.
Modules 2-5 will be released at the end of September 2006, March 2007, September 2007 and March 2008 respectively and will be available for download from this site from that time.
For more information about the materials, you can also contact members of the WYD08 Education Committee.
